Why do we even wear jewellery?

It's not like clothes, where we cover up for health and social purposes - we don't actually need jewelry, so why do we even have it?

The first jewelry we found was necklaces of beads made out of seashells dating to around 100,000 years ago

It was used to establish respect and pride within their tribe. In a lot of ways, we haven't really progressed much. We adorn our bodies with gold and silver, and with that comes a sense of respect from others (look how cool her rings are) as well as a sense of pride for the wearer (look how cool MY rings are).

However it's more than that. We keep gold and diamond jewelry as prized possessions, stashed away in a drawer for years until we pass it down. Very few things in life make it through generations - so why do we treasure jewelry so much?

Other than being literal treasure, there's huge societal value placed on precious metals. Countries would invade others over the stuff. Entire economies were based on how much gold reserve a country had

But it's more than just an asset. Unlike some shares you might pass down, there's a story attached to jewelry. Hearing stories of your grandfather secretly finding out your grandmas dream ring, saving up to afford it, and surprising her on their anniversary. You grew up seeing her wearing it everyday and admiring it. Now it's yours, and it reminds you of her every time you look down.

Jewelry is so much more than the sum of its materials. Jewelry is meant to be enjoyed - whether that means wearing it everyday or keeping it locked away until a special occasion.

As long as the jewelry is being loved, it's serving its purpose.
